🐕 🦺 9 Easy Steps to Help Ensure a Well-Rounded Puppy

By Marc Street, Dog Trainer & Owner of The Happy Dog

  1. Touch Your Puppy: Rub their ears, hold their paws, and gently handle them to prepare them for vet visits and grooming.

  2. Pass the Puppy: Help your puppy meet 100+ people! Make it fun—pass the puppy from person to person so they get used to human interaction.

  3. Feed with Presence: Teach your pup to be comfortable with people near their food. Feed part of their meals by hand to reinforce trust.

  4. Play Often: Introduce gentle games like fetch and hide-and-seek. Practice taking toys away to discourage possessiveness.

  5. Teach Commands: Early Use SIT, COME, DOWN, DROP IT, and LEAVE IT. Enroll in a puppy kindergarten class for extra support.

  6. Roll the Puppy: Gently roll them onto their side during calm play. This teaches trust and acceptance of handling.

  7. Join a Puppy Playgroup: Socializing with other dogs teaches vital communication and builds confidence.

  8. Kids + Puppies: Teach children how to behave around puppies. Never leave young children unsupervised with any dog.

  9. Handle Fright with Calm: If something startles your pup, don’t fuss. Act like nothing happened. Puppies take their emotional cues from you. 🐾 These steps

🧠 Training Approach: Plan • Swap • Reward

Our positive method focuses on:

  1. Plan: Understand the behavior and root cause

  2. Swap: Offer a win-win behavior alternative

  3. Reward: Reinforce with praise or treats

This teaches your puppy what to do, not just what not to do.
