Our Labradoodles Have Fleece Coats

Some Labradoodles look different. What is an Australian Labradoodle, what type of coat will our puppies have?

What Is an Australian Labradoodle—and What Will Our Puppies Look Like?

Not all Labradoodles are the same. Coat types vary depending on breeding history and genetics. At Rainmaker Ranch, we specialize in Australian Labradoodles with wavy fleece coats—soft, allergy-friendly, and low to non-shedding.

How We Define Coat Types

In our breeding program, we categorize coats by texture and wave level. This is more reliable than generalized labels used across the breeding world.

Coat Textures:

  • Fleece – Silky, soft, and lightweight with a chenille feel (our preferred texture)

  • Wool – Dense and luxurious with a soft, woolly feel

  • Flat/Wiry (Hair) – Similar to a Labrador’s coat, slightly textured Coat Waves:

  • Wavy – Loose, flowing wave (this is the hallmark of Rainmaker Ranch coats)

  • Curly – Tight curls, about 1" in diameter

  • Straight – Can be short (2") or longer (up to 5")

Note: Some dogs have a mix of fleece and wool in their coats. For example, our girl Kiwi has a pure fleece coat, while Callie has mostly fleece with a few wooly patches.
